SWARMS of tiny catfish deflated Team England’s medal hopes in the 66th annual FIPSed World Championships, on Serbia’s Danube-Tisa Canal at Novi Sad.
Fishing unsponsored for the first time in 25 years, England finished fifth in the 32-nation field on both days, to end up fifth overall with 41 points.
England’s performance was by no means ‘Sad’. In fact it was one place higher than last year in Portugal, and Matt Godfrey, making his senior England World Champs debut, came within a whisker of an individual medal.
Nevertheless, England finished well adrift of a podium headed by France on 20, Italy on 26 and Hungary on 32, and three points behind fourth-placed Belgium.
Mark Downes, the longest serving England manager, said: “Practise week went well and we got a plan sorted for skimmers on 13 m pole, feeding joker and dead pinkies in an active mix of dark groundbait and leam, with bloodworm on the hook.
