For the past 15 minutes, Chris Hemsworth has been quizzing me about what it’s like to be a twin.
Perched on a rickety chair that barely looks equipped to support his physique, he’s leaning right in – fascinated, but that may also be because I’m so softly spoken. His eyes are crystal blue in the dim pub light. His legs are entangled and up against the table; his arms, if you can call them arms, wrapped around his torso. As FAQs go, he’s ticking off all the main ones.
‘Are you identical? Telepathic? Competitive? Defensive of one another?’ Of course, his curiosity comes as no surprise. He has a vested interest, not in me, but in the topic: he has twin boys of his own, Sasha and Tristan, as well as older daughter India. In a world where so many experiences can feel inauthentic, growing up with your very own sidekick is surely one of life’s most unique privileges. I tell him my twin brother and I never went to the same school. ‘Really? Interesting,’ he begins. ‘My boys went to kindergarten and the teacher said, “I’ve seen this before with twins – they latch on to each other and don’t socialise as much, so we’ll put them in separate groups.” I was like, “No, screw that.” Anyway, we have a wonderful teacher at the pre-school now who just wants to make sure they operate individually. It’s great because they’re still there for each other, walking around holding hands in class sometimes, but they’re also individuals and they do their own thing. Honestly mate, when they are holding hands I’m like, “Where’s my phone? I need to get this on camera!”’ Gushing about your children isn’t really the sort of thing you’d expect men to chat about over a few pints at the pub. But Hemsworth isn’t like most men – something we’ll come to understand more and more.
