Describing celebrated artist Shahabuddin Ahmed as a great asset for Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said on March 19 that the art maestro in his works always serves a deep impression that he is a freedom fighter.
“He (Shahabuddin) is a great asset for Bangladesh. More importantly, he’s a freedom fighter,” Sheikh Hasina said.
The prime minister was addressing the inaugural ceremony of Shahabuddin’s month-long solo art exhibition, titled “SHANTI” (Peace) at the National Art Gallery Auditorium of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the city.
Shahabuddin paints his paintings with the spirit of a freedom fighter, according to the premier. “He’s a freedom fighter artist in every touch of his brush…this is a big thing for us to take pride in,” Hasina said. Hasina went on saying Shahabuddin is known to her from her childhood as he used to live in Kalabagan, which was very close to their residence at Dhanmondi. Wishing the celebrated artist a long life, Hasina said, “We want him to carry on his paintings to continue the songs of our glorious history of the Liberation War and the songs of life in his works.”
Mentioning that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman sent Shahabuddin to Paris in 1974, the prime minister recalled her first meeting with the artist in London in 1980 after the assassination of Bangabandhu. “One day he phoned me after collecting my number …I told him to come over to our place right away to meet us, and he did so…,” Hasina said.
Ganges Art Gallery, Kolkata in association with Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, organised the month-long solo art exhibition with 32 selected artworks of Shahabuddin on display, depicting the artist’s affinity with Bangladesh’s War of Liberation, his fascination for Bangabandhu and other themes Shahabuddin is well known for.
United News of Bangladesh (UNB) is the media partner of the exhibition of the art maestro.
