Operation 'Kill Modi'?
The arrest of five people on June 6—Sudhir Dhawale, Surendra Gadling, Mahesh Raut, Shoma Sen and Rona Wilson—for alleged ties to the Communist Party of India (Maoist) and for allegedly fomenting the New Year’s Day violence in Koregaon-Bhima near Pune, which left one dead (see Now Urban Maoists), took a remarkable twist when they were accused of plotting to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Police said they had found a single “communication” on a laptop belonging to Wilson, a Delhi based activist, that discussed in detail a “Rajiv Gandhi-like incident”. Rajiv was assassinated near Chennai in a suicide bombing in 1991 by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. According to the April 17, 2017 letter, the plotters were seeking to raise Rs 8 crore for an M4 assault rifle and hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammunition.
