Can crystal-infused serums, chakra-powered nail polishes, and aromatherapy oils inspired by “spirit animals” lead you to beauty nirvana? Tatiana Boncompagni uncovers the beauty world’s mystical side
Twice a month, Jenny Cipoletti heads to SkinWorship, a spa in West Hollywood,California, for a transformational facial ceremony. During the two-hour service, which takes place on an infrared mat embedded with amethyst crystals said to help clients relax, she gets a facial massage with custom-blended, mood-enhancing oils followed by microneedling, LED light therapy, and a hydrating mask. At the end comes Cipoletti’s favorite part: a 30-minute chakra clearing with the in-house healer, a Reiki practitioner, who works on her energy and talks to her about her problems—a list that no longer includes cystic acne, thanks to the treatments.
“Beauty is about getting in tune with who you are. There is so much of a connection between our skin and our well-being,” says Cipoletti, the editor of MargoAndMe.com, a lifestyle website. She says a friend, actress Caroline Vreeland, turned her on to the It-girl-beloved spa (Skin Worship’s client list includes a virtual Who’s Who of insider L.A.) two years ago, and she quickly became “addicted” to the $375 treatment (plus an additional $75 for the chakra clearing). “When I come out of my sessions, I feel like I’m floating,” she says.
Credit the mainstreaming of formerly fringy practices like full moon ceremonies and sound baths for the recent swell in services that encourage you to blend a little spirituality into your beauty regimen. Even hair salons are not immune: At Lauren + Vanessa in New York City, stylist Vanessa Ungaro and colorist Lauren Hack offer a crystal cleanse ritual ($250) that includes a Reiki session and head massage using essential oils and crystals—“to open your crown chakra,” explains Hack—followed by a blowout.
