This month I am going to attempt to convert the stock interior of the Tiger into a reasonable racing car interior.
To do this I will have to gut all stock items and replace them with components that are more suitable to a racing car. New items from the parts box will include safety equipment like racing seat and harness, steering wheel and fire equipment. A roll cage will have to be scratch built and the traditional multi metered wood veneer dashboard will be modified to a more modern looking racing item.
Dashboard
I decided to build a pure racing oriented dash for the car. First, I sanded the dash face smooth to eliminate all raised detail. Then I glued a piece of plastic sheet to the dash face, trimming the shape the same as the dash. Now I have a blank canvas (Fig 1) to work on. I really wanted a modern electronic display for the car instead of gazillions of gauges cluttered all over the panel. The answer came to me in the shape of a BMW 318i saloon racer dashboard I found in the spares box. I trimmed the instrument display binnacle and centre switch console/panel from the rest of the Beemer’s dash with a razor saw ending up with the part in (Fig 2). After finessing the mating surfaces and edges of the part, I stripped most of the old paint from it and cemented it in place on the blank instrument panel. I taped the dash to the interior tub to check for fit (Fig 3) and it looked right at home. After filling small gaps, I added a steering column from plastic tube and painted the dashboard gloss white body colour and the instrument binnacle/switch console black. A LED display decal from the spares box was added and switches and circuit breakers picked out in appropriate colours (Fig 4).
