Desh 2 January, 2021 issue focuses on the hallowed Himalayas, the undisputed guardians of our borders, akin to the crown of India. The majestic mountains that shape our destiny by influencing everything from climate to cultures, are now under multiple looming threats. The issue comprises essays by Dipesh Chakraborty, Kalyan Rudra, Jaya Mitra, Anindya Mukhopadhyay, Judhajit Dasgupta, Payel Sengupta and Abhishek Ghoshal. শীতের ময়দানে বইমেলার বক্তৃতায় সেইসব শব্দগুলাে মনে কখনও জড়াে হয়ে যায়। গঙ্গার ওপারে অস্তাচলে যাওয়া সূর্যের ম্রিয়মাণ আলাে দেখতে দেখতে সুধীর চক্রবর্তীর কথা-শব্দের গভীরতর ছাপ থেকেই গেছে। শুনছি, “তালগাছ হােয়াে না— বটবৃক্ষের মতাে হও!” একা একা সুউচ্চের গরিমা নয়, অনেক ঝুরি নামিয়ে, অনেককে আশ্রয় আর ছায়া দেওয়ার ব্যাপ্ত কথা তাঁর গলায়। কোনও কোনও কথার অনুরণন অফুরান স্রোতের মতাে বহমান হয়ে থাকে মনের গভীরে।। সুধীর চক্রবর্তী এমন শব্দের ব্যঞ্জনা তৈরি করতে পারতেন। স্থান-কালের উর্ধ্বে ওঠার কথালাপ চারিয়ে দিতেন এক নির্লিপ্ততায়। বাংলার লােকায়ত জীবনের কথাকার তিনি প্রজন্মান্তর ধরে তৈরি নকশি কাঁথার বুননের মতাে সূক্ষ্ম আর যত্নে পরিপাটি তাঁর ভাষ্য, লেখা।

পর্বতারােহণ: একটি ছিন্নডানা স্বপ্ন

পঞ্চাশের দশকের শেষ দিকে, ইউরােপ-আমেরিকার পাহাড়িয়া আড্ডায়, পােড় খাওয়া এবং পােড় খেতে উদগ্রীব পর্বতারােহীদের মুখে মুখে। একটা আলােচনা খুবই শােনা যেত। আল্পসের শামােনি কিংবা ওয়েলসের প্লাস-ই-ব্রেনিন, মাল্টি-পিচ কিংবা কোনও বােল্ডারিং সমস্যার শেষে, গ্রামের গুঁড়িখানায় বিয়ারের গ্লাসে ফেনার মতােই উপচে পড়ত একটা সম্ভাবনার কথা। শােনা যেত, হিমালয় এবং কারাকোরামের উচ্চতম সবকটি পাহাড় আরােহণ হয়ে গেলেই, পর্বতারােহণের ইতিহাসে এক নতুন অধ্যায় শুরু হবে। বলা হত, তখন আর হাল্লা-চলেছে-যুদ্ধের কায়দায় বিশাল আকার-প্রকারের অভিযান সংগঠিত হবে না। তখন কেবল গুটিকয় বন্ধু, পেল্লায় স্যাক কাঁধে তুলে নিয়ে, অপেক্ষাকৃত ছােট পাহাড়ে, কঠিনতর ক্লাইম্বিং চ্যালেঞ্জের সন্ধানে পাড়ি দেবে। স্নােডনিয়া, লেক ডিস্ট্রিক্ট, কানাডিয়ান রকিস, সিয়েরা ক্যাসকেডস থেকে জারম্যাট-গ্রিন্ডেলওয়াল্ডের পাথর-বরফে ঘষা খেয়ে প্রতিনিয়ত উদ্ভাবিত হয়ে চলা নতুন ক্লাইম্বিং পদ্ধতি, শৈলী এবং সরঞ্জামের যথার্থ প্রয়ােগের ক্যানভাস খুঁজে বেড়াবে এই নতুন প্রজন্মের পর্বতারােহীরা, হিমালয় এবং কারাকোরাম জুড়ে। বলা হত, আফটার অল, ক্লাইম্বিং ইস অলসাে আ ফর্ম অফ আর্ট এবং আর পাঁচটা আর্ট ফর্মের মতােই পর্বতারােহণও বিবর্তিত, উন্নত, আধুনিক হবে এবং মানুষকে ভাবতে বাধ্য করবে।
