We know it has been a manic few weeks back for those of you returning to your chairs, that’s why we have packed this issue full of exciting content, to not only inspire our readers, but educate, inform, and offer helpful tips and tricks from leading experts.

As we all know, adapting is the name of the game, during these unprecedented times. We speak to leading barbers Luka Chitty and Phil Jarman about how they utilised their time during the lockdown for the better, by retraining, and adding another notch to their belts. 

This issue has Sheldon Edwards the unofficial barber for the England football team proudly taking centre stage on our front cover.

Sheldon talks to us about his career, his work with the Premier League footballers and how he influences hair trends with the creations he comes up with for the stars of the football field.

Summer has Finally Arrived, and so has our 27th Issue of BarberEVO UK & Ireland!

After a few weeks of manic panic, queues down the street, and 12+ hour days, it seems that the industry has reached its natural flow again… until all those back-to-school haircuts get booked. We are infinitely impressed by the way this industry has bounced back with grace and professionality. So, without further ado, welcome to our newest issue of BarberEVO, as always, filled to the brim with entertainment, education, and inspiring content! Enjoy.

AT LAST, THERE IS A GLIMMER OF LIGHT ON THE HORIZON. SHAKING AWAY THOSE WINTER BLUES, WE ARE LOOKING INTO THIS SPRING WITH OPTIMISM AND ENTHUSIASM AND ARE CONTINUALLY INSPIRED BY THE TALENT AND PERSEVERANCE WITHIN THE INDUSTRY. 

This issue features a touching tribute to Allan Stone by Vikki Harrison-Smith, remembering Stoney, his victories, and all the joy he brought to the industry. 

We are delighted to showcase Wahl Barber of the Year: Kilian Maddison, this issue. 

We are also looking forward to some of this year’s events such as BarbersRide 2021, which will take place this in August, raising funds for Make-A-Wish foundation. 

We are also looking forward to this year’s Barber Connect. We spoke to Matt Brice from Barber Blades, and organiser of Barber Connect – who has had a year to think about the future for the UK’s largest barber event, after last year’s event was cancelled due to the current pandemic. 

We spoke to owners of what we think are some of the UK’s most aesthetically impressive barbershops, such as Alternative Barbering Co, Kitch Hair, Tallboys, and Avanzato Grooming. In this segment, we talk inspiration, design, ergonomics, practicality, and even, ‘instagramability.’ Learn how to create a space that not only draws clients in but makes them want to stay forever—or at least come back, time and time again. 

Speaking of design and ergonomics, we also celebrate Takara Belmont’s centenary in this issue, and their one hundred years of comfort, style and evolution. 

We were lucky enough to catch up with Jody Taylor, highly acclaimed session stylist and BaByliss ambassador, to hear about how he found his way into the industry. 

We also chat with Robert Rix and Paddy Hunter, to hear their two-cents about apprenticeships, building skills of the trade, and their personal experience with apprenticeships.

WE’VE ALL BEEN WISHING AWAY 2020, AND WE CAN ONLY HOPE THAT 2021 BRINGS ALL THE THINGS WE MISSED OUT ON LAST YEAR. WE NEED STABILITY, THE RETURN OF CLIENTS TO THE BARBER’S CHAIR, AND UNITY WITHIN THE INDUSTRY.

We are delighted to welcome an esteemed barber to our list of columnists, Robert Rix of The Company of Master Barbers in Southport. We are honoured to welcome him to the BarberEVO family.

In this issue we have pulled together a really strong array of opinions on hair trends for 2021. It seems that longer hair is on the way back and the lockdown has forced prolonged hair growth that is here to stay. 

We were all saddened to hear of the death of our friend Sam Wall, and we felt it only right to update our readers on the outstanding response that Sam’s friends pulled out the bag in honour of a much loved guy. Team Sam Wall have been pounding the streets racking up the miles and raising more than £15,000 for charity. We salute you!

We would also like to mark the passing of the legend, Tony Roberts of Just Gents, in Milton Keynes, a grand master barber, and a wonderful character, we send our thoughts to his family and friends.

Back to the content in this issue and we take a look at the benefits of investing in studio time when it comes to putting together a collection. Kevin Luchmun tells us why opening his own studio has been a game changer.

Finally, we catch up with Luka Chitty about his ongoing Together Create project which encourages you to think local when sourcing a venue for your next shoot.

If there is one thing that we love about the barbering industry, it is how much it continues to change and grow. Whenever we sit down to decide what topics to cover each issue, there is always something new or a different perspective to take.

Education is key to the future of barbering and one of the most contentious subjects in the industry, well, that and barber extraordinaire and part-time cage rattler “The Pissed Off Barber”.

The subject is often skirted around, but in Issue 11 we put the questions on everybody’s minds to some of the UK’s leading educators. Are NVQ’s being delivered properly? Are they even aligned with the demands of the modern barbershop? What does “job ready” even mean? Mike Taylor, Vikki Smith and Sid Sottung give their honest thoughts.

Cover stars Adee Phelan and Josh Lamonaca are undisputedly two champions of the barbering industry. Josh reigns supreme and Adee Phelan has returned to the frontline after a brief hiatus. Ok, so football may not be coming home but it still remains quite the year for barbering and the success has been spread across the UK and Ireland.

The barbering industry in Ireland and Northern Ireland has continued to develop its own identity and is explored and celebrated inside the pages of issue ten.

The incredible Ryan Cullen is the star of this month’s Barber Focus, we take a look at Londonderry’s Bareknuckle Barbershop and delve into the shops of Northern Ireland’s capital.

This now the tenth issue and although we seem to have the format down (to some extent) the brand is still evolving. Headcase Barbers – with almost 30 barbershops across the globe – discuss what it takes to create a brand and we speak to two of our favourites, Hard Grind and Captain Fawcett.

We also welcome new columnists, including Ruger Barber’s Carlie Firth, and some of our friends from across the pond to give their insight into the industry. As always, all this and much more can be found across the next hundred pages.

Many would argue that barbering was previously viewed as being cheap and cheerful. We would argue that by in large this is no longer the case. The question does remain, however, how can a haircut be worth £250?

Yep, that’s right. Inside, we talk to Instagram’s most followed barber, Arod. The Holywood-based barber has amassed an impressive 1.2 million Instagram following and charges top dollar for the VIP experience at Elegance Studio. He discusses how you can create a higher value service for your clients. Adee Phelan certainly knows about providing high value services too; he was the man behind David Beckham’s mohawk and he discusses his impressive career with Larry The Barberman.

We also sit down with SB Academy owner Vicki Smith to discuss women in the barbershop. I know, I know, it’s been done to death and the consensus is that women are no longer a novelty in our industry. We are certainly seeing more women at the top of the game, but is this indicative of what is happening in barbershops throughout the land? Vicki isn’t so sure.

We recently launched BarberEVO North America at the CT Barber Expo and you can read our reviews of that show and of Barber Bash London inside. As always, there is far too much to list so I’ll just let you get on with it!

Issue eight explores the progressive nature of the barbering industry.

The very definition of barbering is now under question. Previously the general consensus seemed to be it relates to men’s hair but it might not be that clear cut anymore. We discuss how LGBT-friendly Hairrari NYC ensure a trip to the barbershop is an affirming experience for all. Is it the techniques? 

We talk to Kevin Luchmun and Charlie Cullen who in many ways epitomise the current shift towards male hairdressing.

Women are also no longer a novelty in the barbershop. Pope The Barber, owner of LA’s Vatican Barbershop, talks to Larry The Barberman about the importance of building a brand and we look at the female-led education platform Barberella, who recently hosted their second event in The City Of Angels.

Kicking off – you’ll understand the poor pun later – we have everybody’s favourite Irish, barber battling, travelling barber, Ms Leah Hayden Cassidy and the similarly nomadic Edinburgh-born Australian Men’s Hairdresser of The Year Tori Gill, whom recently collaborated with Kevin Luchmun in New York. You can read his diary from the Big Apple on page, well, check the contents.
 
Interviewer extraordinaire Larry The Barberman manages to pin down (not literally) all three directors of Menspire and Jody Taylor, and I finally get to interview Mark Maciver, AKA Slider Cuts – barber to two of my favourite human beings on the planet, AJ and Stormzy.
 
We also dive into the dichotomy of fashion in the industry, the artwork that has been inspired by it and the Bloody Butcher himself gives us a tour of his tattoos. There is, of course, also some factual-based stuff that may be of interest to you all.

As I said in issue one some twelve months ago, it’s always nervewracking putting something you’ve created into the world but the reception has been truly
phenomenal. We aimed to bring something new and different to market
that represented the current UK barbering scene and those in it. I hope you agree that we’ve come close to achieving that. Of course, I’d like to thank the sponsors, advertisers and everybody that reads the magazine and the team for you continued support.

The penultimate issue of the year has landed.

Inside, we explore the idea of legacy – leaving something behind for the next generation. Eric Pacino reveals his rags to riches story, the outspoken Johnny Baba considers his empire and Adam ‘Nergal’ Darski – front man of Polish metallers Behemoth – reveals how he returned from the brink of death to make his biggest mark yet on two different industries.

Alongside these industry giants, we speak to two rising stars of British barbering – cover star Maisie Speed and Joey Power – on how they intend to rise through the ranks and make their mark. Ken Hermes tackles the taboo of Turkish barbering and we also explore the relationship between our craft and tattooing.
Oh, and we try to answer the not-so-simple question of “what is real barbering?”

For me, the last edition was a game changer so this was always going to be a challenge.
Fortunately, we’ve pulled together more stars than the Oscars and I hope to have orchestrated them better than James Franco.

Two things in particular stood out to me this fourth issue.

Firstly, the amount of international talent included. We always try to strike a balance in each issue but, as pointed out by Vince The Barber and Kevin Luchmun in our UK vs US feature, the craft of barbering is continuously becoming globalised.

We sit down with one of the world’s most diverse educators; Lena Piccininni, former felon turned founder of the CT Expo; Jay Majors, barber to the stars; John Mosley and many more.

The second is just how openly people have spoken to us about their lives and careers. Success doesn’t come without struggle and a story can be a valuable gift to help others with their own journeys.

They said third time’s the charm, eh? Well I can say with confidence that this is our finest issue to date. Then again, I would say that. “It’s definitely better than the first, but perhaps doesn’t reach the dizzying heights of the second” wouldn’t have quite the same ring. It keeps being said and it’s certainly true: barbering is currently the most exciting trade to not only be in, but also be around. By definition, a barber is “a person whose business is cutting men’s hair and shaving or trimming beards”. It’s so much more than that. They are a friend, a confidant, an influencer at the forefront of fashion. “Barbering” is the act of cutting a man’s hair. Not anymore. It’s a subculture, a movement.
