What are the best engines ever conceived in Italy? That’s the question we’re attempting to answer in a major two-part feature. This month it’s engines from two to six cylinders, and we’ve nominated a stellar congregation: Fiat-Abarth 595, Lancia integrale twin cam, Alfa GTV ‘Nord’, Fiat Coupé 20v Turbo and Alfa 147 GTA V6 Busso. We also ask another big question this month: was it Ferrari and Pininfarina or Lamborghini and Bertone that triumphed in the epic battle for design supremacy that ran from 1965 to 1980, from Miura to Berlinetta Boxer? We road-test Maserati’s Merak SS and feature Alfa Romeo strongly, too, with the otherworldly Alfa ‘BAT’ concepts of the 1950s, the Alfa 155 Q4 and the latest 2020 Stelvio. Hold the front page: Alfa Romeo’s all-new compact SUV is here. When we went to Italy for its unveiling, it was presented as the Milano, but its production name is now Junior – and we have a full profile. What was the world’s first ever hot hatchback? It was 50 years ago that Ferrari put its first V8 engine in a road car - a great reason to celebrate with four generations of V8 Ferraris, from 308 GT4 to SF90. Two classic car group tests make this month’s Auto Italia unmissable. This month’s Auto Italia is full of unique surprises. On UK roads, there’s just one Alfa Romeo Crosswagon Q4 (the all-wheel drive Alfa 156), and we’ve driven it, putting in back-to-back with an almost equally rare 33 4x4, 159 Q4 and Stelvio Quadrifoglio. 2022 marks the 75th anniversary of Ferrari and to celebrate we’ve plenty about Prancing Horses in this month’s issue. Not only do we have a full road and track test of the new 296 GTB – Ferrari’s first ever V6 road car – but we do a run-down of the 75 greatest cars ever made at Maranello. We have news of three more highly important newcomers this month: SUVs from Alfa Romeo (Tonale) and Maserati (Grecale), plus 2023’s Maserati GranTurismo (with fully 1200hp).
