SHOWBIZ 'NEPO BABIES' SPEAK UP
The Philippine Star
|September 11, 2025
SINCE THE "BUZZ DU JOUR" IS ABOUT "NEPO BABIES," this writer asked some celebs their thoughts on having famous parents or grandparents who paved the way for them in the biz.
Only two stars were brave enough to answer.
I also happen to be a so-called nepo baby because of my mom, Inday Badiday. I made a conscious effort to veer away from her world by taking up AB Linguistics at U.P. Diliman and studying in Paris. But I was thrust into showbiz eventually.
It's not easy to step out of the shadow of a parent who is larger than life. You suffer by comparison and are given little leeway for mistakes. Earning your stripes entails extra effort because you must prove that there is more to you than being the "baby" of a famous personality.
The celeb mom/dad opens the first door, but the rest of the way is up to you.
Tabi, tabi po sa ibang NEPO babies who are in the news. Unlike them, I have no qualms about taking the MRT and I enjoy thrift shopping at Cubao Expo. My mom taught me that the best things in life are not things and money is not the only currency.
Ciara Sotto: "There are pros and cons, because, in my experience, people expect more from you, especially if you have famous parents.
"As a young girl, sometimes it felt like they were only being nice to you because of your parents.

The truth is not enough
On the sidelines of the Frankfurt book fair, over many breakfasts and cups of coffee with fellow writers, the tangled web of Philippine politics inevitably came up for discussion, particularly at this juncture when it seems imperative to sort out the good from the bad (or, to account for the nuances of the moment, the better from the worse).
