IN a significant move, the Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed, on "humanitarian grounds", the return of Sunali Khatoon, a pregnant woman, and her eight-year-old son, Sabir, to India, seven months after they were deported to Bangladesh.
The decision came after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, assured the Court that the government would bring back Sunali and her child "purely on humanitarian grounds" and that they would be kept under surveillance. The Court accepted Mehta's request.
