AMBEDKAR WOULD HAVE BACKED 370 ABROGATION, SAYS FORMER CJI GAVAI

Former Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai has said the Indian judiciary remains “fearlessly independent” and is not influenced or pressured in its decision-making. In an exclusive conversation with NewsX Managing Editor Rishabh Gulati, he asserted that judges decide cases strictly on facts and law, and independence does not mean ruling against the government in every matter.

Reflecting on the Supreme Court’s judgment upholding the abrogation of Article 370, Justice Gavai said Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar would have been “the happiest person”, as the architect of the Constitution advocated a united India with “one nation, one constitution and single citizenship”. He said the decision aligned with Ambedkar’s views expressed in the Constituent Assembly debates.
