If it shuts it will finish town and destroy families

ONE sign, of many, said it all. The words were simple: "Save our steel, our town, our jobs, our future."

It was held up by the son of Scunthorpe steelworker Robert Barraclough, 38, whose fourth child is due next month and who is fearing for his future.

Robert told us: "The town is struggling and there's not many jobs to go to. Families like ours with mortgages wouldn't be able to keep it going.

"They'd have to default on their mortgage. Me and my wife have spoken about what we'd do. We'd probably have to move away."

He was part of a huge gathering to show solidarity in this hardworking community, 180 miles north of Parliament. It may as well be a million, such is the contrast with Westminster's gilded elite.
