Kim Medcalf brings scheming Sam Mitchell back to Walford - so be prepared for emotional reunions, lies and exposed secrets

- WORDS: CHARLOTTE TUTTON

Back in the Square

Sam is nervous about seeing Phil

It's been almost two years since Sam Mitchell last graced our screens, fleeing Walford after severing ties with brother Phil and the Mitchell clan. But Sam may need her family more than ever when she returns to Albert Square as part of an emotional new storyline.

As actress Kim Medcalf, 51, reprises the role that she first took on back in 2002, she details the troubling secret Sam is keeping from her son Ricky Branning. She's facing a breast cancer scare after discovering a lump, and it's her late mother Peggy Mitchell's own battle with the disease, and her death in 2016, that leaves Sam convinced it's serious.

"This is the second time Sam has found a lump in her breast and 20 years ago, she felt very lucky it wasn't anything serious," Kim explains. "This time, Sam assumes it's going to be a different outcome because of Peggy's history. She feels like the same thing is going to happen to her, so she's putting her head in the sand."
