Mum suffered cardiac arrest during Turkey tummy tuck operation

Rochdale Coroner's Court

Ruby Khan died in the intensive care unit of a clinic in Turkey after flying to the country for the cosmetic operation, an inquest has heard today (October 30).

Ruby, from Oldham, was begged by her family not to fly away for the surgery, telling her that she ‘just had a baby, and would lose weight over time’

But the family says Ruby replied that she ‘had to do this for herself, telling her mum, dad, and four sisters that she ‘knew what she was doing, that a lot of people have had this procedure before and been OK.

But just days later, Ruby's sisters found themselves frantically calling the clinic, asking ‘what have you done to my sister?’

Ruby, a housing officer, had just moved back to the family home from London in February 2025. She was a ‘bubbly, happy person who was always full of life, and lit up the rooms she walked into!

Ruby loved her family, visiting them regularly over the years she spent living away.

But Ruby had already been planning her visit to Turkey for the procedures before she came back to Oldham. They only found out about it when she moved back into their home.

Rochdale Coroners’ Court, presided over by Manchester North Assistant Coroner Matthew Cox, heard how the 30-year-old had an eating disorder.

Despite the concerns of her family, Ruby ‘wouldn't listen, and was ‘bubbly and excited for the treatment, the court heard from the family.

After speaking to Ruby's sisters, Shamina Yasmin and Fatima Khatoun, a police coroner's officer gave the following evidence: “Ruby's family tried to talk her out of it.
