Today's the day historic fair opens to take over town centre

ONE of Europe's oldest fairs opens today.

Ilkeston Charter Fair will bring rides and traditional shows to thousands of visitors.
The fair, which this year has extended opening hours, dates back to April 10, 1252, when King Henry Ill granted the Charter.
The King's Charter begins: “Know ye that we have granted and by this our charter confirmed to our beloved and faithful Hugh son of Ralph, that he and his heirs for ever shall have free warren in all their demesne lands of Elkesdon.”
