Access improved to coastline and beach thanks to government funds

MORE than £70,000 has been invested in projects to make the North Devon countryside more accessible to people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, including new beach wheelchairs and improved walking trails.
The funding was awarded in 2024 to the North Devon Coast National Landscape by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) through its Access for All Fund and Capital Uplift grant scheme. The money has been used to support a range of projects across the region’s coast and countryside.
Among the initiatives, the charity Access For All has expanded its fleet of beach wheelchairs, known as Hippocampe all-terrain chairs, to popular sites including Combe Martin, Putsborough, Croyde and Woolacombe. The investment also funded new promotional materials and a dedicated website - accessforallbeaches.org.uk - providing vital information to help visitors plan their trips.
