SC frames questions over Punjab plea on BSF jurisdiction expansion

The Supreme Court on Monday framed questions of law to be considered in a suit filed by the Punjab government challenging the Centre's notification of October 2021 that extended the jurisdiction of the Border Security Force (BSF) from 15km to 50km from the international border.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud framed six legal issues arising in the lawsuit after receiving draft suggestions from solicitor general Tushar Mehta appearing for Centre and advocate general for Punjab Gurminder Singh, along with state's additional advocate general Shadan Farasat. It will take up the matter again in April.
The state had filed a suit in the top court in 2021 challenging the October 11, 2021 notification issued by the Union home ministry. The notification violated the principle of federalism by affecting the legislative power of the state over subjects such as public order and police, it had said.
