Himachal HC terms PIL as 'publicity interest litigation'

Public interest litigation (PIL) is a weapon that has to be used with great care and circumspection.
SHIMLA: The judiciary has to be extremely careful to see that behind the beautiful veil of public interest an ugly private malice, vested interest or public interest seeking is not lurking," observed Himachal Pradesh high court (HC) while imposing a cost of ₹50,000 on a petitioner, who has filed a PIL alleging assault and torture of an inmate of a correction home in Shimla.
Terming the PIL as "publicity interest litigation", the division bench of acting chief justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan and justice Satyen Vaidya, in its order of December 23, while clearing the staff of wrongdoing, directed petitioner Ajai Srivastava, chairman of Umang Foundation, "to be careful in future" while adding "merely being acknowledged for doing some good in the past does not give licence to anyone to do something bad."
