Pariah Putin strengthens ties with China as Ukraine war enters critical stage

XI JINPING today welcomed Vladimir Putin to China as Moscow pressed forward with a new offensive in Ukraine.
The leaders signed a joint statement on deepening the strategic partnership between their two nations.
The Biden administration has accused the Chinese government of supplying significant, direct, and material assistance for Putin's invasion of Ukraine.
Mr Putin, a pariah elsewhere on the world stage, said negotiations between the two delegations were businesslike and warm this morning.
Relations between the two countries are "not directed against anyone", he was quoted by Russian state news agency RIA Novosti. "Our co-operation in world affairs today is one of the main stabilising factors in the international arena," he claimed.
The Russian leader cannot travel to many countries for risk of being arrested and sent to the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes.
