Cheers! Cheltenham reveal ‘important’ Guinness news

THE big news in horse racing this week came from Cheltenham, which revealed its price for a pint of Guinness had been cut 30p to £7.50.

In the wider scheme of things - set against funding problems, tax threats from the government, affordability checks, shrinking foal crops, an unappealing fixture list and welfare concerns - it’s probably not the biggest deal in the world, which Cheltenham supremo Guy Lavender perhaps had in mind on Tuesday when the news was announced alongside a raft of other changes at the track.
“The price of a pint of Guinness is a peculiarly emotive issue for many people,” he said, before at least qualifying it was “important”.
How important is unclear, but what is certain is that the Cheltenham Festival - once the jewel in the Jockey Club's crown and a huge cash cow for the group - is not enjoying a prosperous patch.
