Court hears mum lost her son at 70th party

Victim Martin O'Donovan

A BIRMINGHAM man was knocked down and killed by a car driven by his sister's boyfriend after they downed Jagerbombs together at a family birthday party, a court heard.

Relatives joked that victim Martin O'Donovan, 47, had developed a “bromance” with Stephen Bates after the pair met for the first time at the celebration in Liverpool in April, jurors were told.

But the city’s crown court heard the pair later had a fight after 42-year-old Bates got drunk. He left the scene but returned in his Ford Fiesta and was said to have “deliberately” driven at Mr O'Donovan.

Bates, of Mossley Hill, Liverpool, is on trial accused of murder.
