Tokyo Gas: E-methane will anchor Asia's clean energy

As the global energy industry shifts towards decarbonisation, Takeuchi Atsunori, executive officer of Tokyo Gas, Japan's largest gas supplier, says e-methane and renewable natural gas (RNG) will be central to a carbon-neutral future.

In this interview, he discusses Tokyo Gas's international initiatives, the challenges of cost and technology, and the impact of US energy policy on the company's plans.

What is e-methane, and why is it important for the future of the gas industry?

E-methane, or synthetic methane, is produced by combining hydrogen — made from renewable sources like solar or wind — with captured CO2 from industrial processes. The result is a carbon-neutral gas that can be used in existing natural gas infrastructure. It offers a pathway to decarbonisation without dismantling current networks.

What makes e-methane different from natural gas, and who is developing it?

Natural gas, such as LNG, is a fossil fuel, while e-methane is entirely green. In Japan, the main developers are Tokyo Gas, Osaka Gas and Toho Gas. Smaller firms struggle to enter the space due to high production costs.
