On September 14, 1975, during the first Māori Language Week, a group of 50 or so left Te Hapua on what would become known as the Land March.

They were led by kuia Whina Cooper (Te Rārawa) and her 3-year-old mokopuna, Irenee. Those first steps on that dusty Te Tai Tokerau road were famously caught by NZ Herald photographer Michael Tubberty. Numbers had swelled by September 22 as the hikoi reached Tāmaki Makaurau.
