The sculptural object, now on view in the Schlumberger Gallery of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, weaves all the elements of the tale we want to tell: rare friendship, rare stones, horticulture, celebration, inspiration, confidence, roots, and wings. At the center of the piece, which Jean Schlumberger created for Rachel “Bunny” Mellon, is an extraordinary 94-carat sapphire.
