There is something basic about making marks on a paper surface. It invokes spontaneity that is experienced by both the artist and the viewer. Works on paper provide us with an aesthetic and contemplative distance that is distinct from works that induce a spectacle. One says this especially in the contemporary art context where there is a marked emphasis on multimedia and experiential artworks that are all-consuming and often do not allow the viewer to contemplate works in a quiet and reflective space.

These thoughts are relevant while engaging with works that are part of the online show Paper Trails featuring Nandini Bagla Chirimar, Samit Das, and Sheetal Gattani, and hosted by Delhi’s Gallery Espace, as part of In Touch from the 17th of July to the 7th of September.
