MOSCOW/KYIV - Western governments remained divided on Friday over the dispatch of heavy tanks to Ukraine.
This comes even as the German government the main opponent of a military escalation that could anger Moscow - warned that Kyiv was losing soldiers in the triple digits on a daily basis in the battle for the east and south of the country.
Russia said on Friday that its forces had captured two villages in Ukraine, including a hamlet south of the eastern town of Bakhmut, now the epicentre of fighting between Kyiv and Moscow's forces.
Russia's Defence Ministry said pro-Russian separatist forces with artillery and aviation support had taken control of Klishchiivka, in the eastern region of Donetsk.
Klishchiivka, which had an estimated population of around 500 people before Moscow sent troops to Ukraine, lies south-west of Bakhmut, suggesting Russian forces were attempting to encircle the town.
News magazine Der Spiegel reported on Friday that Germany's foreign intelligence service is alarmed by losses the Ukrainian army is suffering in fighting against Russian forces in Bakhmut.
