Crime stories are stirring. Mysterious and packed with minute-by-minute tension wrapped in a sense of forbidding fear, they never cease to grip me.

The other evening, I watched a lovely crime caper, The Woman in Cabin 10, now playing on Netflix (which is getting better by the day). Adapted from a novel by Ruth Ware, it tells us the story of a Guardian journalist, Laura Blacklock (Keira Knightly).

Knightly just fits this part, as she has in several other films, notably period pieces - as Elizebeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice (an Oscar nod), in Atonement (a tragic war tale with a poignant love story woven into it), in Anna Karenina (a historical romance), in The Imitation Game and in
