Braced for Trump

SIR, I refer to your editorial, "Trump's way" (January 22). Donald Trump's return to the presidency has once again captured the world's attention, reminiscent of his first term from 2017 to 2021.

His polarising policies and unconventional leadership style have created a mix of anticipation and apprehension, both domestically and internationally.

Trump's re-entry into the White House signals a shift towards a more transactional form of diplomacy, where alliances might be renegotiated based on economic interests and tough bargaining. His groundbreaking Abraham Accords illustrate his bold diplomatic moves, but his potential 60 per cent tariff on Chinese goods hints at economic turbulence on the horizon. Europe is now rethinking its reliance on America, as Trump's approach is clear: adapt or face confrontation.

Back in the US, Trump has redefined conservative politics with a nationalist, confrontational style. Traditional GOP principles have been overshadowed by fierce opposition to illegal immigration, progressive education, and conventional fiscal policies. His pledge to boost the working and middle classes suggests an economic resurgence, but his aggressive promotion of a more assertive form of democracy might alter the essence of American liberalism.

Awaiting the grand finale

It is interesting for me to observe how conversation topics with my friends have evolved with our age. Before we reached retirement age our discussions focused on women/relationships, travelling to exotic places, our professional activities, children's future, debates about Obama's birthplace, sports, movies etc. In more recent years, the focus has shifted to health issues, social security benefits, reminiscing about life, existence of God, financial planning in old age and so on.
