DMK organisation secretary and former MP R S Bharathi said the searches were a result of the BJP being "unable" to digest the DMK government's popularity in Tamil Nadu, and accused the saffron party of using central agencies to "avenge" opposition parties. According to sources, the searches may continue on Saturday and Sunday.
The I-T operation has come just days after the minister, who also holds charge of prohibition and excise departments, faced criticism over death of 23 people in a hooch tragedy and BJP state unit president K Annamalai demanded his removal as minister following a Supreme Court ruling in an alleged cash-for-jobs scam.
Speaking to reporters in Chennai, the minister denied reports that he was being raided by authorities and said searches were being conducted at the properties of his brother Ashok Kumar, his friends, relatives, and their acquaintances. During the search at one of Ashok's property, some cadres allegedly broke the windshield and rear-view mirror of an I-T official's car. Karur SP E Sundaravathanam said police were not informed about the searches and the I-T officials also didn't bring any CRPF personnel for protection.
