Rain batters Thrissur; Red alert issued

Two days of heavy downpours and gusty winds have caused widespread damage across the district

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Thrissur on Monday following two days of intermittent downpours and gusty winds that have caused widespread damage across the district.

According to official data, two houses were partially damaged in Thrissur taluk, while one house in Mukundapuram taluk was completely destroyed after uprooted trees collapsed onto it amid heavy rain. In the coastal region, strong winds blew off the asbestos roofs of seven commercial shops, and a traditional Chinese fishing net belonging to a local fisherman was completely destroyed.

Gusty winds were reported in Arimbur, Thrissur taluk, where the asbestos roof of a pumping house was blown away. In Chavakkad taluk, waves lashed the coast and damaged houses in Maloottyvalavu, Moosaroad, Munakkakadavu, and Velichennapadi. While no major structural damage was reported, high tide waves have continued to batter the shoreline in several parts of the district. Authorities have also warned of the possibility of 'Kallakkadal' — a sudden swell in the sea — and issued advisories for fishermen to stay ashore.
