IN a major relief to the Congress, the income tax department on Monday informed the Supreme Court that it would not take any coercive action against the cash-strapped party with regard to tax demands till the Lok Sabha polls are over.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the tax department, made the undertaking before a bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Augustine George Masih, which was hearing an appeal by the Congress against a 2016 judgment of the Delhi High Court. In the appeal, the party had moved an interim application seeking a stay of the recent demand notices by the tax department.
