AIMED at cutting down salary and pension bills and freeing up funds for urgent procurement of weapons, the Cabinet Committee on Security on Tuesday approved a new recruitment scheme for the three wings of the armed forces. Christened ‘Agnipath,’the major defence policy reform paves the way for recruiting 46,000 ‘Agniveers,’ including women, this year.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh termed it a “historic” decision in the presence of the chiefs of all the three services — Army, Navy and Air Force.
Under the scheme, about 45,000 people between the age of 17.5 years and 21 years will be inducted into the services for a four-year tenure. The recruitments will begin within the next 90 days and the first batch will be ready by July 2023. “The scheme is called Agnipath and the youth selected under this scheme will be known as Agniveers,” the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.
The Agnipath is designed to enable a youthful profile of the armed forces. “It will provide an opportunity to the youth who may be keen to don the uniform. They can plough back their skills, discipline and motivation into society,” said the ministry.
