Holly explains that she was inspired initially by The Book of Trespass by Nick Hayes, in which the unfairness of English law is picked apart through his skilful writing and illustration.
“I was shocked but not surprised to learn about the history of land ownership since William the Conqueror who divided up the land, creating estates for the favoured few, evicting whole villages in the process. Those land boundaries still exist!
“Vast tracts of land are still hoarded by wealthy landowners, which means that the rest of us share just 8% of the land in England and often these ‘right to roam’ areas are virtual islands stranded in a sea of land where the public are not allowed walk.”
“When I saw there was a march campaigning for the right to roam taking place on Dartmoor, I was keen to go with my daughter but felt apprehensive about taking her,” continues Holly.
“In fact there was absolutely no sense of an angry mob. We went with another family and had a wonderful time in a fun, joyful, colourful crowd of around 3,500 people. The sun shone, a large puppet representing Old Crockern, the guardian spirit of Dartmoor, led the way and there was a definite sense of everyone sharing a love of Dartmoor.
