PLYMOUTH'S "virtually derelict" city centre could be regenerated after the city was chosen for one of Prime Minister Liz Truss' new low-tax "investment zones" Plymouth City Council has been included in a list of six South West local authorities earmarked as investment zones in new Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng's so-called mini-budget speech.
Plymouth is now one of 38 authorities nationally invited to work in partnership with the Government to create an investment zone. Details of what Plymouth's investment zone could include will be part of a business plan submitted to the Government.
But it is expected to include "interventions" designed to speed up the delivery of proposed housing, retail and mixed-use developments. The council said it could mean the city centre benefits by unlocking millions of pounds of investment for housing and business growth.
