As the world marks World Diabetes Day 2025 under the theme 'Diabetes and Wellbeing', recent data reveals a worrying picture for India.
According International to the Diabetes Federation (IDF) Diabetes Atlas 2025, about 89.8 million Indian adults (aged 20-79) were living with diabetes in 2024 - one in seven adults globally. The figure is projected to cross 134 million by 2045 if current trends continue.
Experts say the surge is fuelled by genetic predisposition, rapid urbanisation, sedentary habits, and unhealthy diets.
A PharmEasy report analysing over 4 million diagnostic tests across 29 states found one in two Indians had high blood sugar. Nearly one in three HbAlc results were diabetic, and one in four showed prediabetes - over half had abnormal glucose levels.
