B-BBEE not on US agenda

Removing broad-based black economic empowerment (B-BBEE) rules for US companies does not seem to be a main concern in trade talks between South Africa and the US as it is a political issue, rather than a commercial one.

Parks Tau, the minister of trade, industry and competition, spoke to the SABC about their progress with the negotiations.

The president’s special envoy, Alistair Ruiters, has been at the talks for three weeks.

Tau said the US delegation felt the deal South Africa offered was not ambitious enough and still unilaterally imposed the 30% on its imports.

South Africa had agreed on a road map for official engagements to conclude the negotiations, he said.
