Hundreds step out on moors for youth challenge

MORE than 550 children laced up their boots at the weekend to take on one of the region's most challenging endurance tests - the Exmoor Youth Challenge with hundreds successfully completing the demanding 16-mile trek across the Exmoor terrain.

The event, held on Saturday, May 3, started and finished at Dulverton School and brought together 136 junior and five senior teams from 58 different schools and organisations. Although most were from the South West, teams travelled from as far as Maidenhead and Sparkford to take part.

Each team, consisting of four members aged 10 to 18, navigated a rugged course west of Dulverton, with checkpoints and question-based challenges along the way. Five teams participated with just three members.

In total, 559 children started the challenge.

Despite the tough conditions, 480 competitors completed the full route and were awarded individual medals.
