BRITISH OPEN AGONY FOR ALLEN

GUTTED Mark Allen suffered heartache in last night’s British Open final. 

The world No 14 was the overwhelming favourite heading into the weekend as the highest ranked player left in Milton Keynes.

But the Antrim potter, a 1/4 shot before the final, found the trophy an agonising step too far as Ryan Day picked up the biggest title of his career with a gritty 10-7 win.

The £100,000 top prize went begging for the Masters champion as well as a guaranteed spot in next month’s Champion of Champions.

The Pistol will now need to successfully defend his Northern Ireland Open title later this month to qualify for the elite 16-man invitational event.

“I wouldn’t even say it was nerves I just completely lost my action,” admitted Allen.

“He went and won the match.
