Quick and easy glühwein recipes to soothe the soul

WITH the winter season in full force, there’s nothing quite like the comforting embrace of a warm drink.
For many, this means indulging in a steaming cup of glühwein, a traditional mulled wine that has captured the hearts (and taste buds) of many during the frostiest months.
With roots dating back to Germany and Austria, glühwein — translating to “glow wine” — has been a part of festive traditions for centuries, warming both body and spirit.
First documented in 1420 with the discovery of a glühwein tankard belonging to Count John IV of Katzenelnbogen, this delightful beverage is steeped in history.
But the tradition of drinking mulled wine transcends borders — Roman troops consumed spiced warm wine as early as the First Century CE, a custom they carried across the regions they conquered.
This long-standing appreciation for mulled wine can be attributed to its tantalising blend of spices, fruit and, of course, wine.
Traditional glühwein features a medley of spices including cinnamon, clove and star anise.
