With winter approaching and flowering plants becoming harder to find as the world turns browner, wouldn't you like to look for something that stays green and growing?

Mosses, along with two other families called hornworts and liverworts, make up what is known as "lower plants". It's an awful sounding phrase but doesn't refer to their importance but more their evolution.

Mosses have been on this planet for nearly 450million years. For reference, the first fish that paved the way for all land animals clambered out of the water about 370m years ago and human ancestors started walking upright only about 6m years ago. Moss is almost older than it is possible to comprehend.
