VERNON Kay has admitted that stepping into Ken Bruce's Radio 2 shoes today is "like replacing Alex Ferguson" at Old Trafford.
The presenter today takes over the morning slot after Ken's 31 years with the BBC station and has been so keen to keep the DJ's legions of fans he's rehearsed his whole show off-air.
Vernon, 49, admitted in advance of his debut: "Let's not beat around the bush. Ken's show is massive and it's all thanks to him and what he's done over that long period.
"It's like replacing Alex Ferguson. It's taken [Man Utd] several managers. I hope it doesn't take Radio 2 several DJs to replace Ken.
"So let's not put the lifeboats out too early. Keep it positive."
The husband of Strictly Come Dancing host Tess Daly spent the last week practising with the equipment in studio 6A and even doing dummy commutes from their home in Buckinghamshire: an 8am train then an 11-minute e-bike ride.
Contemplating the size of the task and the legacy audience of 8.4 million is only natural - Ken was an iconic figure for listeners but moved to Greatest Hits Radio in March.
Vernon revealed: "I'm feeling more nervous about the journey than I am putting the microphone up.
