Urges more dialogue to ease tensions

A senior Japanese government spokeswoman has rejected China's assertion that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has shifted Japan's position on a potential Taiwan crisis, calling the claim "entirely baseless" and urging more dialogue to prevent ties between the two Asian powers from deteriorating further.

China warned it would take “resolute self-defence” against Japan if Tokyo “dared to intervene militarily in the Taiwan Strait”, in a letter delivered Friday to the United Nations as Beijing sought international backing in its dispute over the self-ruled island it regards as its territory.

“I’m aware of this letter,” Maki Kobayashi, a senior government spokeswoman, told Bloomberg News. “The claim our country has altered its position is entirely baseless,” she said on Saturday on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Johannesburg.
