PP defends ‘20 pick 1’ formula for drafters

The opposition People’s Party (PP) has defended the “20 pick 1” formula, under which a group of 20 MPs and senators nominates one constitution drafter each, saying it ensures fairness and reflects the will of the people.

PP leader Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut addressed concerns raised by a special committee studying constitutional reform’s decision to adopt the formula for selecting members of the Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC).

Critics fear the method could lead to orchestrated outcomes, but Mr Natthaphong argued it is the fairest approach given the proportion between MPs and senators. He acknowledged that seat selection depends on the parliamentary majority, which risks allowing any bloc holding more than half of both chambers to dominate the CDC.
