The Tank watch was invented in 1917 by Louis Cartier, who took inspiration from a military tank to design the watch, hence its appellation. The "Normale" Tank was followed by the Tank Louis Cartier in 1922, which began to feature a more rectangular case. 1977 and 1988, respectively, saw the release of the Must de Cartier and the Tank Américaine. The 1990s welcomed the Tank Française, whose name alludes to a very French state of mind.
Following its debut in 1996 as part of Cartier's great Tank family, the Tank Française won the hearts of many with its metal bracelet that blends in perfect harmony with the case. Now in 2023, the iconic watch returns with seven new iterations; four in yellow gold, of which two are diamond-set, and three in steel.
THE NEW TANK FRANÇAISE
Two of the new Tank Française in 750/1000 yellow gold are small models, while another two are medium models. Both come with an option of with or without diamond-set bezel. As for the steel version, it is available in small, medium, and large models. Unlike all the other models, which feature a quartz movement, only the large steel model houses a mechanical movement with automatic winding. As such, it is also the only model with a date window, which can be found at 3 o'clock.
