I LOVE FOOTBALL. It is in my soul.
My happy place is Singapore, led by Fandi Ahmad, winning the Malaysia League and Malaysia Cup double in 1994. But of course, for those of us who remember, we had to leave the M-League under an acrimonious cloud of scandal and politics.
This weighs on my mind as I write about the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. We all know there's so much to unpack about the tournament and the many scandals that have rocked it, but I only have one page in the epilogue. So let's do this.
The first scandal is in the fact that Qatar even won its bid to host the World Cup. A recent statement by the U.S. Department of Justice revealed that Qatari representatives had bribed FIFA officials, as the Russians did to win the right to host the 2018 tournament.
