Test fleet: KTM 790 Duke

Ross has been getting to know KTM's Chinese-built naked. Here's the lowdown

Test fleet: KTM 790 Duke

I love a middleweight Spend any time on one and it's immediately clear why they're so popular with the bike-buying masses. Quick and capable enough to make rapid progress, but without the silly licence-losing amounts of power and compromised comfort you'd get from a 'proper' sport bike. I reckon they're probably the perfect option for road riders who like pressing on.

I've ridden a whole host of the current crop, including Ducati's Monster, Yamaha's MT-09, Triumph's Street Triple and KTM's 890 Duke. They're all good in their own slightly unique way, with enough variety in price, performance and styling to suit a whole range of riders. There are also a couple of new bikes, in Suzuki's GSX-8S and Honda's Hornet - which have received favourable reviews, though I've not had the chance to put them to the test just yet.

There is another option though. KTM's 790 Duke has just made a comeback. Dropped from the range a couple of years ago, it might seem like a bit of a strange decision on the Austrian factory's behalf to reintroduce it... It's already got the allsinging, all-dancing 890 Duke R, so why would KTM want to risk eating into sales by reintroducing a bike that's in the same sort of ballpark?

The back to BASICS BOXER

While it may have a slightly cumbersome name — one that needs to be pronounced as such to distinguish it from other models in the range — the Gee-slash-Ess is not simply a pure retro design, nor is it just a convenient way to extend the life of an older engine. Instead, it represents an expansion of the current model range, one that actually brings additional capability to BMW's big twins.

Escape to EXCELLENCE?

Just over six years ago, Italy's historic Moto Morini marque narrowly avoided the scrapheap of motorcycle history when, in October 2018 Chen Huaneng, owner of Chinese scooter and minimoto manufacturer Zhongneng Vehicle Group/ZVG, rode to the rescue by acquiring 100% equity in Moto Morini from its previous Italian owner.

SOUTH EAST ASIA

At the end of 2019 I sold my business. A motorcycle tour and adventure business on the scale of Motorrad Tours is an all-consuming occupation and I wanted more time for Karen and I to travel for ourselves. In 2009 we had been lucky enough to ride from Alaska to Argentina over five months and a big adventure was calling us again. As the old adage says, “Man plans, God laughs”

Mossy has done plenty of longer, big-mile runs on his NT, but this month two of his happiest destinations were more local. Going to the ABR festival is always worthwhile, but so was a visit to an unusual nearby café.

THREE way FLING TALKING TOURING TYRES ROADTEC™ 02

We like to keep things balanced here at MSL, as much as we can, and while the three bikes we chose for the trip were about as different as it is possible to be while staying within the ‘sports tourer’ bracket, not only did we even things up by using soft luggage on all three, we also fitted the same tyres.
