Ever wondered how top riders master their mindset and sharpen their focus to be at their best on big occasions? Becky Murray discovers their secrets

TALENT and skill, wonderful horses and enviable facilities are just some of the things top riders have in common – another one is a powerful mindset.

But while some people might be naturally talented, creating a winning mindset takes work, just like honing a new skill or training a horse through the levels. And once this mentality has been mastered, riders then need to be able to apply this carefully crafted perspective at competitions on command.

International Grand Prix dressage rider Abi Lyle says she has worked hard on her attitude.

“I’m an anxious person, and if anything I’m going to try too hard at competitions, so I need to be zenned out, and as calm as possible,” she says, adding that she did a lot of mindset work ahead of London International in December.

“I focused on what I wanted to achieve; showing a good harmony between me and my horse, and showing off our training.”

Abi, who made her senior team debut for Ireland at the 2022 World Championships and last year rode at the Europeans, says since things became “more serious” in terms of competitions, she makes sure she spends time enjoying herself while she’s there.

“I’ve had to work on finding enjoyment in it because I can easily ruin it for myself by overthinking and feeling the pressure too much,” she explains.

“It’s harder on the bigger occasions, but I’ve accepted who I am. I am a nervous person, and I’m never not going to be nervous – but there’s a difference between being nervous and being overwhelmed.
