Heavenly St Albans

All roads lead to…

Although it may be one of the UK’s smallest cities, St Albans is steeped in history. Built on the site of Verulamium, it was at one time Roman Britain’s third largest town, and its links to the past are felt everywhere. From the ancient Theatre built in 140AD, to the defensive wall that can still be traced for two miles, and the Verulamium Museum bursting with ancient artefacts and stunning mosaics, it’s a fascinating insight into the past.

It’s not all about the Romans, though. This is where the War of the Roses began, the first draft of the Magna Carta was written, and it also has its own medieval clock tower, which you can climb for a view of the city with its surrounding ancient woodland.
