Veteran broadcaster Kay Gregory has worked in TV and radio for 40 years, yet fewer people know that the Coast FM newsreader is also a marriage and funeral celebrant. Kay, 58, opens up about some of her most memorable services, her biggest on-air gaff and how she became obsessed with golf.
Kay, how long have you been a marriage and funeral celebrant?
It will be 20 years next year. It all started when I was doing the weekend weather for TVNZ and I was looking for a little something else. One day I was out walking in Parnell with a friend when it started to rain. We took shelter in this little historic cottage and got talking with the lady looking after it. She was doing the celebrant course. We walked out the gate and both of us said at the same time, “I could do that,” and my friend said, “You could do that.” I enrolled that day. And it was absolutely ‘me’ from day one. Isn’t it funny that life does that sometimes?
What was your very first wedding and funeral like?
